Taking a Stand in Baltimore
This has been a powerful, moving and confronting few days in our city. Through the anger and sadness, these weeks shined a powerful spotlight on injustice and inequity. It has challenged us all. The death of Freddie Gray challenges us. And, the stories of violence and destruction in these last few days challenge us.Today, though, folks from different places, spaces and perspectives emerged strongly to show the heart of Baltimore. Communities and community leaders have emerged. With peaceful protests, clean-up efforts, drum-lines, meditation and prayer circles, music, and more – our city came together to acknowledge the work that will need to be done going forward, and to take a stand on how that work should happen. Our stand at City Neighbors has always been the same. We know there is important and great work to be done – in our educational system, in our communities, and in our classrooms. And, through our work centered on a positive and powerful vision of Baltimore’s children and families, on the importance of community and creating relationships, on the essentialness of arts and project explorations of mind and heart, and of doing the work together by assuming the best intentions and working to bring folks closer, we will work even harder to be part of the long-term solution going forward. We will continue to share images and the work and thoughts of our students, teachers, and community. Look closely! These are the children of Baltimore.
